What is Moneyball Investing?

My name is Adam and I’ve been fascinated with sports since I was young, but baseball, in particular, caught my attention because it allows for the impossible. Interestingly, the same can be said about the stock market.

In the early 2000s, Moneyball Theory entered the baseball scene.

It’s useful for cash-strapped teams because it typically identifies undervalued and overlooked players.

A lot of people miss out on investment opportunities because they are skeptical and suspicious that something out of their control will happen and negatively impact them. Similar to the Moneyball Theory, we (retail investors) are the “cash-strapped teams” looking for “overlooked players” (mispriced assets).

What is this newsletter about?

Moneyball Investing is broken two categories: equity research and sports cards. My goal is to send a newsletter from each category on a weekly basis.

Equity Research:

The equity research portion of the newsletter includes three components:

  • Weekly Roundups: Each week I will post a collection of articles that I’ve written.

  • Unfiltered Equities: These will be deep dive analyses on stocks that I currently hold or am researching. The primary purpose of these reports is to be up front, honest, and call it how I see it.

  • Hidden Gems: This section includes companies that I think are takeover targets, or stocks that I think have fallen significantly but still contain value over a long-term time horizon.

Sports Cards:

If you are a fan of the hobby or like reading interesting stories positioned at the intersection of business and sports, you’ll enjoy this section of the newsletter. It’s called On Deck and will cover trading cards, collectibles, and sports wagering.

Each week I will post the top 5 market movers from basketball, baseball, and football cards. The posts will include a picture of the card, a graph illustrating historical price movements, and my backup source data. Additionally, I’ll share some links to articles that I read throughout the week pertinent to the hobby.

What is my experience?

I’ve spent nearly a decade in financial analysis roles that have provided me with a wealth of skills ranging from financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, investor relations, capital raising, and corporate M&A. I have also reported directly to CFOs of both public and private equity-backed companies.

I leveraged what I learned from being an analyst and started investing on my own. I started with $30K over a decade ago and, by investing in capital markets, that $30K is now worth over $500K.

How did I do that? I’ll tell you… It wasn’t by trading options or other derivatives, or by trading penny stocks. I 10x’d my investment by researching companies, studying their business, listening to earnings calls, and making sound investment decisions.

I firmly believe that if you find quality companies and, more important, quality management, you can reach financial freedom by doubling down and letting your winners ride.

What can I expect from this newsletter?

This newsletter will not show you how to get rich quickly. That dynamic isn’t real. Hard work and patience pay dividends in the long run (it’s a pun!).

Ultimately, I’m here to do the following:

  • Help people create wealth and be confident about investing decisions.

  • Provide unfiltered opinions on headlines and things that that I find interesting. I will call it as I see it and if you are offended or triggered, you may unsubscribe at any point.

What else do I do?

This newsletter complements my YouTube Channel and Motley Fool briefs. I try to keep things conversational in my videos. My briefs on the Fool are relatively short and are meant to provide a glimpse into what stocks I am analyzing and why. I will post longer, more detailed analyses in this newsletter.

I primarily distribute my content on Twitter: @moneyballinvest
